But perhaps the most important painting is that of Sir Walter Scott, done between 1814-17 (one of which Nicholson used as a model for a popular etching that was included in the publication “Portraits of Distinguished Living Characters of Scotland” published 1818). Nicholson was known to have painted four watercolors of Scott, one is in the National Gallery of Scotland and two others held by the University of Edinburgh, but the forth, which was last exhibited in Edinburgh for the Sir Walter Scott Centennial had become lost to historians. The so call “Abbotsford Variant” of the portrait, much sought after by Francis Russel, author and contributor to the “Dictionary of National Biography” remained a mystery, until now. The portrait along with others descended directly from the artist though his family and was consigned by Nicholson’s great, great, great, great granddaughters. The portrait still retains the exhibition label from the Centennial Exposition.
